4 Pinan

This pinan must be practiced if you are to advance to 3rd Degree Brown Belt ranking. By now, you should be well-versed in the basics of proper practice – that is, keeping your back straight, head up, proper balance, power in your punches, kicks and blocks.

  1. Assume front position and bow. Right foot steps out into horse stance, bring hands together vertically double downward blocks, pull fists to elbow position, press arms forward and back palm side of fists up.  N
  2. Look and double spear poke to the left.  Pull left foot into cat stance facing W with right open hand upward block and left open hand outward block.  W
  3. Pivot feet into a right cat stance facing N.  Look and double spear poke to the right E.  Pull right foot into cat stance looking E with left open hand upward
  4. block and right open hand outward block. Looking E
  5. Face N left half moon step with double cross hand block down.  Right foot meets left in front position facing N, hands in cup and saucer on your left side.  N
  6. Right foot half moon forward with right outside block and left front two-knuckle punch middle.  N
  7. Left foot meets right in front position facing N, hands in cup and saucer on right side.  N
  8. Left side kick low with left back fist high towards W, leaving hand out landing in left half moon stance facing W, left hand grabs opponent high, right elbow strike high.  W
  9. Right foot meets left in front position facing N with hands in cup and saucer on left side.  N
  10. Right side kick low and right back fist high towards E leaving fist out, landing in right half moon stance facing E, right hand grabs opponent high, left elbow strike high.  E
  11. Look and pivot feet into a left leaning stance facing NW, with left upward block and right ridge hand strike low, double outward ridge hand blocks, double poison thumb strikes high.  NW
  12. Both hands grab high pulling downward into right rising knee, right front instep kick low landing in horse stance facing SW.
  13. Left foot crosses behind landing in right twist stance facing SW with right outside block and left thrust punch middle towards NW
  14. Right foot steps out landing in left cat stance facing SE. Rotate arms counterclockwise 2 times (double circular blocks) opening into, double outward knife hand blocks.  SE
  15. Both hands grab opponents wrist pulling into left front kick landing in left half moon stance with left front two-knuckle punch high, right front two-knuckle punch high.  SE
  16. Right foot pulls into right cat stance facing SW.  Rotate arms clockwise 2 times (double circular blocks) opening into, double outward knife hand blocks.  SW
  17. Both hands grab opponent’s wrists pulling into right front kick middle landing in right half moon stance with right front two-knuckle punch high, left front two-knuckle punch high.  SW
  18. Left foot steps into cat stance facing S. Rotate arms counterclockwise 3 times (double circular blocks), end with left hand down in an open block and right hand up in an open block while simultaneously twisting your feet into a reverse Cat stance.  S
  19. Right foot steps forward landing right cat stance. Rotate arms clockwise 3 times (double circular blocks), end with right hand down in an open block and left hand up in an open block while simultaneously twisting your feet into a reverse Cat stance.  S

5 Pinan

This is the last of pinans to be mastered, and it is required for 3rd Degree Brown Belt. You will notice repetition of movements used in earlier pinans, although they may be coupled in new ways to provide the student with alternatives to cope with any different situation.

  1. Assume front position and bow. Right foot steps to side landing horse stance, bring arms together vertically, double downward blocks, bring fists to elbow position, press arms forward and back with palm side of fist up. N
  2. Look and turn left, left foot pulls into cat stance facing W with right inside block (#3), left outside block (#2).  W
  3. Left foot steps out landing in left half moon stance with right front two-knuckle punch high, left downward palm block, right back two-knuckle punch high.  W
  4. Right foot pulls into cat stance facing E with left inside block (#4), right outside block(#1).  E
  5. Right foot steps out landing in right half moon stance with left front two-knuckle punch high, right downward palm block, left back two-knuckle punch high.  E
  6. Twist your feet to face N in a left half moon stance, with hands in ready position. N
  7. Right foot steps out landing in right half moon stance with double cross hand blocks low.  N
  8. Left foot half moon forward with double cross hand blocks high, both hands grab opponent high and pull downward to right side, left Back Fist strike high.  N
  9. Right foot half moon forward with right thrust punch middle.  N
  10. Right foot steps backward landing in horse stance facing E with right side open back hand high and left fist covers chest, left side open back hand high and right fist covers chest.  E

  15. Look and turn left as left foot pulls into cat stance facing NE.
