Remember as you do this form, which is required for attaining Green Stripe Belt, to keep your back and shoulders straight. Concentrate on your imaginary targets and execute all movements with balance and power.

  1. Assume front position and bow. Right foot steps out into horse stance, bring hands together vertically, double downward blocks, pull fists to elbow  position, press arms forward and back with palm side of fists up.  N
  2. Look and turn left pulling left foot into cat stance facing W with left outside block.  W
  3. Right foot meets left in front position with right outside block and left downward block, right downward block and left outside block.  W
  4. Look and turn right as foot steps backward pulling right foot into cat stance facing E with right outside block.  E
  5. Left foot meets right in front position facing E with left outside block with right downward block, right outside block with left downward block.  E
  6. Hands in cup and saucer on right side, left foot steps out landing in side horse stance facing E with left outside block and right thrust punch middle towards.  NE
  7. Look and turn left, with right foot step into horse stance facing W, right ridge hand low and left hand under right elbow.  W
  8. Right hand sweeps opponents leg, look and turn left with right foot step out landing in horse stance facing E, with left side back fist high towards N and right fist striking your chest.  E
  9. Look and turn left with right foot step out landing in horse stance facing NW, with right thrust punch low.  NW
  10. Look and turn left, right foot meets left in front position facing S, double outward crane’s wing blocks, hands land in cranes beak on lower back.  S
  11. Right front kick middle landing in horse stance facing E, lean left, right foot pulls into right cat stance facing S with right outside block.  S
  12. Right foot steps to side landing in right half moon stance with right back two-knuckle punch high and left tiger claw strike low.  S
  13. Left foot meets right in front position with double outside crane’s wing blocks, hand lands in crane’s beak on lower back.  S

6 Pinan (Statue of the Crane)

The Shaolin Monks patterned many movements after animals and birds found in nature. Nowhere is this demonstrated, more clearly than in this complex form. The martial artist can visualize the graceful, and deadly bird after which this form is named. Proficiency with the Statue of the Crane is required.

  1. Assume front position and bow. Right foot steps out into horse stance, bring hands together vertically, double downward blocks, pull fists to elbow position, press arms forward and back with palm side of fists up.  N
  2. Left foot meets right in front position arms circle outward over head and cross left over right in front.  N
  3. Left foot steps back landing in left half moon stance facing SW with left outside block and right front two-knuckle punch high.  SW
  4. Right foot pulls into left in front position facing N arms circle outward over head and cross right over left in front.  N
  5. Right foot steps back landing in right half moon stance facing SE with right outside block and left front two-knuckle punch high.  SE
  6. Right foot meets left in front position facing NE, double outward crane’s wing blocks, hand crane’s beak in back.  NE
  7. Jump forward onto left leg, jump backward onto right leg.  NE
  8. Jump backward onto left landing in crane stance with left upward block and right downward block.  NE
  9. Right foot steps out landing in right half moon stance with right upward block and left spear poke strike high.  NE
